First Japanese Beetles of the Season Detected
via Invasive Species Council of BC
As daytime temperatures consistently hit 21C, Japanese beetle (JB) flight season is officially underway -- running from June 15 to October 15.
Japanese Beetle flight season is officially upon us, and with it, the first detections of this invasive species in 2025. So far, all detected beetles have been found within the bounds of the Regulated Areas, but it is up to us to ensure that they do not spread.
During this time, adult beetles emerge and begin searching for over 300 types of host plants (or a mate), feeding on flowers, trees, and even your veggie patch.
Flight season is in effect until October 15. All landscape professionals working within the regulated areas are reminded to stay vigilant and prevent the spread!
Japanese beetles are around 1 cm long and easy to identify: look for metallic green bodies, copper wing covers, and 12 distinct white hair tufts along the sides and rear of the abdomen. They may still be hard to spot in low numbers, but your vigilance matters!
