Another successful school year concluded mid-April for Kwantlen Turf students. WCTA Conference in Penticton featured our Turf Club hosting a lively opening Pub Night, many hours of conference volunteer work, starry performances at the Hockey Challenge, and a $2,000 donation to Turfgrass Research. Tab Buckner and Peter Sorokovsky represented our associations at Kwantlen’s ‘Horticulture Awards’ night in April. Glen Atamanik won WCTA and Jeff Norris awards, while Grant Steinberg took CGSA and  BCGSA honours. Krista Hewlet, Janine MacDonald and Tom Peterson won KPU Fisher awards.

12 Kwantlen Turfgrass diploma students travelled to Penticton March 2-5 for the 50th WCTA Conference. Students saw the latest products at the Trade Show, learned at great presentations and networked extensively with industry professionals.   They also rang the show in by organizing a very successful Pub Night attended by 70 turfgrass managers.  Many thanks to David Duncan and the Kwantlen Turf Club for sponsoring this very successful event, along with Bos Sod for the bentgrass turf.

This was originally to be another report about Kwantlen Turfgrass student activities, but reviewing Steve Broccolo’s biography got me detoured.  Reading about Steve’s life emphasized for me the real strength our profession.

Students combined local community service with hands-on learning for several projects this fall. They renovated the lawn of the Michaud Heritage Home, rebuilt the practice green for Tall Timbers, cored & topdressed for Langley Lawn Bowls, raked bunkers at Poppy Estates and renovated a Langley ballpark pitchers mound and bullpen.

12.01.19-Kwatlen-Hort200“I am fortunate to be able to say that I spent August 20th - 26th at The Vancouver Golf Club as part of the greens team. During this time period the VGC proudly hosted the LPGA CN Canadian Women’s Open. As a turf and business student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University I found this experience tremendously valuable.

12.01.19-Kwatlen-Hort200Turf students built a soccer field for our fall ‘Yard Reno Makeover’, core-topdressed Langley Lawn Bowl, repaired Langley’s Barbour Field bullpen and renovated Langley’s Michaud Heritage House lawn.  Their fundraising efforts allowed for student attendance at the Victoria WCTA Conference, where their activities generated over $2,000 for turfgrass research. Kwantlen Turf Club capped the year with a recent $500 donation to turfgrass research.
